Helpless

Violet is sick - or was. I don't know at this point. She woke up with horrible belly pain. Bad enough that I called the doc and he sent is to the ER. It's 3 hours later and she seems totally fine as we wait foe the ER doc to see us. Did I over react ? Panic? It's so hard to know. What I do know is I feel helpless.

This part of parenting is so difficult. In most other situations I feel in control. Intelligent. Adult. When one of my kids is sick enough to need a trip to the ER I don't feel any of those things . This is what patenting books don't tell Us about.

  1. ((hugs)) You didn't overreact. It's always seems like my children get better when we go to the Urgent Care center or the ER. But I think it's best to go, especially if your doctor sent you.

I find the lack of control is the hardest part of parenting as well. I hope everything turns out okay.

  2. I hope she's better by now.

Kids are great at being on their death bed and then acting fine for the doctor. Buster's done it to me a million times.

  4. Sick kids - I never know what's right. Taking them in, turns out it's nothing. Letting it ride at home, to find out it's some raging ear infection. We just do our best - it's all we can do.

  5. I'm hoping she's better by now, and that you know what it is . . . but I need to tell this story because, well, it's funny, and I'm hoping it makes you laugh.

All through high school, I went to the same music camp - it was a week at a liberal arts college in central PA (I ended up actually going to this college, but that's irrelevant to this story). After my freshman year of college, I was invited to the camp to come as a counselor, and I gladly accepted. The pay was bad, and the hours sucked (seriously 6am-11pm, every day), but it was a bit of nostalgia.

The last night, we have a talent show . . . and when you're at a music camp, well, the talent show is either really good musicians, or really campy skits. Either way, it's a whole lot of fun.

At the end of the talent show, a little girl -- couldn't have been more than 7th grade, comes up to me. "John, my tummy hurts." (I had emcee'd the talent show, so there was an air of "in charge" that, apparently, I had)

I look at her, and she's obviously in distress. I find the lead counselor. We find that the onset was very sudden, and it wasn't alleviating, at all. The girl was nearly in tears, but wasn't showing any of the other symptoms of something truly horrible, like a ruptured appendix.

We decide to drive the girl to the urgent care center . . . she heads back. About 20 minutes later, the doctor comes out. She had gas. She needed to fart. Badly.

She was fine after she did.

  7. Thanks, it's so good to know I'm not alone! She's OK now. Tired beyond belief, but no more belly pain.

  8. She's OK now, no belly pain anyway. I'm so glad to hear somebody else's kid does the same thing!

  11. I replied the wrong way before, so you might be getting this twice :) That is the best story. I'm cracking up over here -- that's totally what I was afraid it was. It may have been! She's fine now, just tired and ornery.

  12. A kiddo in pain (for any reason) is such a heartache and massive pain for the mama. It's horrible to see your little one suffering and not be able to fix it all up. xoxo
